Why You Need to Market Your Business Online

by Brian Carr in SEO Business on Nov. 19, 2010

Think about it. From your own personal experience, when was the last time you used the phone book? Do you remember the last time a radio or TV commercial compelled you to buy something? Heck, do you even remember the last radio or TV commercial you saw or heard? How often do direct mailings end up unopened in your trash or recycling bin? Cold calls? Forget it!

Anyway, I think you’re starting to get the point. The fact is, your customers have learned to completely tune out “traditional” forms of advertising. This is mostly because you are invading their space and time trying to force your service, product, or message on them when, more often than not, they’re not in the mood to listen or entertain what you’re trying to tell them.

However, online marketing, in particular search engine optimization (SEO), is not the least bit invasive because your potential customers are out on Google actively seeking the products or services you provide!

If someone types in “roofing contractor” in Google, there’s pretty much a 100% chance they need a roofing contractor and are willing to become someone’s paying customer. Conversely, if you’re a roofing contractor and you send out direct mailings to 1,000 households, what are they odds 1) someone actually looks at your ad before throwing it in the trash and 2) the person looking at the ad needs a roofing contractor right that minute? Slim to none.

By focusing on online marketing, you can drastically increase your return on investment (ROI) on your marketing budget. By focusing on outdated marketing methods, you may as well just flush your marketing budget down the toilet and watch all your potential customers go to your competition.
